The commencement day

Ziauddin College of Rehabilitation Sciences successfully enrolled its Twelfths Batch of Doctor Physical Therapy, Fifth batch of Doctor of Occupational Therapy and fourth batch of Bachelors of Health Physical Education and Sport Sciences for the year 2022. The commencement day for the newly enrolled batches was held on the 21st December 2021 at the Abul Hasan Jaffery Auditorium Ziauddin University Clifton campus. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Chancellor, Pro chancellor, Registrar and other dignitaries of Ziauddin University along with the principal ZCRS.

The commencement day started with the recitation of the holy Quran and the audience rose in respect for both the national and Ziauddin University’s anthem, followed by a brief video regarding life at ZCRS. The new batch was officially handed over to the Principal, Ziauddin College of Rehabilitation Dr Sumaira Imran Farooqui by the honorable Registrar Engr. Rtd. Capt S. Waqar Hussain. Dr Prof. Sumaira, Principal at ZCRS congratulated and welcomed the new batches on beginning their new expedition with ZCRS and briefed the audience regarding the evolution of ZCRS.

The Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Abbas Zafar also spoke on the occasion and wished the students luck for their transition from being intermediate students to university students. Moreover, the Chancellor Dr. Irfan Haider also dignified the event by his presence and acknowledged the students regarding the legacy created by Late Dr. Sir Ziauddin Ahmed and he further gave students some exceptional piece of advice to benefit them excel their university life and professional life ahead focusing on the significance of Jamal-e-Fan and Kamal-e-Fan. On this special Occasion, the Pro Chancellor Dr Nida Hussain also addressed to the audience and assured the students regarding the extended support of the university to help them succeed in their fields. 

 During the ceremony, the representative students of DOT batch III brought miniature gardens planted by them as souvenirs for the honorable guests as a token of appreciation. After the distribution of souvenirs, the Principal of Ziauddin College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Prof. Dr. Sumaira Imran Farooqui introduced the students to the Faculty of the all the four locations of ZCRS i.e. North, Boat Basin, Link Road and Sukkur campus. Secondly, a brief introduction regarding the administrative and non-teaching staff was also given who tirelessly work to ensure that all the activities within the college are smooth. 

The post-graduate program coordinator at ZCRS, Dr. Amna Aamir khan also addressed and acknowledged students regarding the opportunities for them to continue further education in the field of physical therapy apart from choosing their career in the clinics. Moreover, the clinical head for Ziauddin group of colleges for Rehabilitation Sciences, Dr. Prof. Abid Mehdi Kazmi shared a few words of wisdom for the students as well. To make the event memorable, group photographs of the students with the faculty and chief guests were taken after which a brief informative session was conducted by the faculty of ZCRS. Mr. Zaki Hasan and Miss. Zulekha Saleem Assistant professors at ZCRS who enlightened the students regarding the examination policy of the college. Moreover, the Informational and Technology department representative Mr. Minhaj also trained the students regarding the student portal and handling of their accounts for academic activities. Lastly, the Office of Students Affairs Ziauddin University briefed students regarding the exciting events incoming their way to make their academic journey more happening and lively. Special giveaways were distributed among the newly admitted students to make their day even more memorable.

ZCRS encourages students to explore their creative side and supports the development of artistic skills within students through participation in recreational and artistic activities. With that being said, ZCRS Congratulates Dr. Mubarak on his victory and hopes that he succeeds in his future endeavors as well.

Inter-University Sports Tournament 2021

The students of Ziauddin College of Rehabilitation Sciences participated at the Nazeer Hussain University inter-university sports tournament starting from 25th November 2021 onwards. The sports tournament comprised of numerous indoor sport matches of table tennis, badminton, including board games like carem and ludo while, outdoor sports like cricket was included in the competition. During the tournament, the students of ZCRS not only gave a tough competition to other participating teams but, they succeeded to tremendously win several matches. For table tennis, ZCRS boys’ team was victorious in the competition while, girls’ team was the runner-up for female table tennis match. With respect to the board games, ZCRS won the carom match for the singles as well as mix-doubles game, the team also managed to badge the trophy for the badminton matches. Along with these remarkable victories, the students were runner ups for ludo match.

Students Week

Academic stress can decrease student’s performance levels and lead to a lack of concentration in studies as well. Thus, to boost both the cognitive and non-cognitive skills within students, the student council arranged a fun filled student’s week to provide the students with a temporary escape from the burden of exams. The activities included a mystical Qawwali night, Sports day and a refreshing trip to the beach.

The Qawali night or, Shaam-e-Sufi was organized on the 16th October 2021 at the main Ziauddin University Clifton campus, the venue was specifically decorated for the event. The presence of Sabri brothers was the main highlight of the evening that made the atmosphere much captivating by their soulful music creating a spiritual journey for the attendees.

On the 14th November 2021, a picnic was arranged at the Nathia Gali Naval beach to restore the spirits of the students as their exams ended. The picnic spot was exceptionally striking with a pleasing view. After reaching the venue, students were provided with a beach house to settle down and breakfast was served. Moreover, different food stalls were also arranged that had popular street food items like Limca and bun kebab. Down the hill, the students enjoyed the sea breeze and tapped toes to the music with their friends, other activities like kite flying and color sprays were also available for them. Overall the event was properly managed by the organizing team with adequate amount of food to facilitate the students.

Last but not the least, in order for the students to unleash their hidden athletic abilities, a 3 day based Sports event was arranged starting from 18th of November 2021. The venue for Day 1 was the Sindh Sports Complex and, the main sport for the day was badminton. Different teams of students from all the three campuses competed in Single, Doubles, Mix-doubles where the teams showed great enthusiasm. The winners for day 1 badminton single for both girls and boys was Link Road campus while, for double and mix doubles, the North campus secured the wining position. Day 2 of sports arranged at the Clifton family park was full of energy where the main sports were futsal, throwball, basketball and table tennis. For the girls competition, the team of Clifton campus won throwball while, the boys futsal team from North campus took the victory. However, with respect to the basketball match, link road campus won the competition. The last day, ended with cricket and table tennis matches where Clifton boys team won the cricket match. Table Tennis was won by Clifton in Girls Single and Mix Double while North Boys won the Single and Doubles.

 The student’s week turned out to be a very happening and lively event for students and was impressively managed by the team as well.

ADDRESSING NEEDS OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENT’S MENTAL HEALTH

International webinar was held on the occasion of the World Occupational Therapy Day to address the emerging mental health needs of children and adolescents on 4th November’2021.

SPEAKER: Dr. Hassan I. Sarsak who is the PhD ,OT Doctorate degree in Rehabilitation sciences with a concentration in occupational therapy (OT) from the University of Pittsburg USA associate editor in World Federation Occupational Therapist bulletin, Author of comprehensive dictionary in Occupational Therapy.

The webinar objectives were to raise awareness of the mental health issues that are frequently reported in children and adolescents. In the form of research papers, the speaker emphasized the necessity of evidence-based practice in order to identify the variables that contribute to mental health disorders. The speaker also discussed relaxation methods like Tai Chai, Milieu technique, Reminiscence therapy, and other strategies.

Entrance Test 2021-22 ZCRS-Sukkur Campus

After the registrations in Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, Ziauddin University, Ziauddin
College of Rehabilitation Sciences – Sukkur campus has conducted the entrance exam, to test
the skills of candidates for undergraduate program of 2021-2022 on Thursday, 11th of
November 2021. Faculty of ZCRS – Sukkur campus, examination representative and other team
members worked together as a team to make the event successful following all the SOP’s.

Webinar- Physical Therapy in Wound Management: A Rehabilitative Approach

A successful webinar aimed at raising awareness about Wound Management in Physical Therapy via different Physical Therapy related techniques.

The speaker M. Shahrukh (Assistant Professor, ZCRS) have specialty regarding Integumentary Rehabilitation from past 5 years, he worked on Evidence based practice, indulging researches on his practice, through this webinar he initiates the step of awareness in wound management via Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation around Rehabilitation community of Pakistan. He informed about the prevalence of Burns in Karachi and Pressure ulcers also different types of wound and its Physical Therapy management via manual therapy and Electro physical Agents.

“Belong Be You Gala” is an endeavor to build society that promote inclusion and diversity, Occupational Therapy Department at ZCRS arranged a carnival at boat basin location on 3rd November 2021.

Reputable NGOs and organizations such as  Karachi Vocational Training Centre, Markaz E Umeed For Amazing Children, Dewa Institute For Special And Inclusive Education took  active part along with their students  brought amazing art n craft and vocational products for display and auction

This gave them a platform to exhibit their work and work towards financial independence with the goal of empowerment and enablement. There were horticulture therapy stalls by DOT students for psycho-social outlet.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN FORENSIC PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION

International webinar was held on the occasion of the World Occupational Therapy Day to highlight the role of occupational therapy in the Forensic Psychiatric Rehabilitation in collaboration with the Scottish Government’s Global Citizenship on 5th November’2021.

SPEAKER: DR KHURRAM KHAN and his team, consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at The State Hospital Carstairs NHS Scotland, United Kingdom.

The objective of this webinar was to educate students about the role of occupational therapists in forensic psychiatric rehabilitation. Dr. Khurram talked about strategies, intervention, risk factor assessment and protocols of patients. While Hannah Connor, Chelsea Burnside and Monique Burgess (Occupational Therapists) presented a brief overview of occupational therapy process at forensic rehabilitation to promote occupational performance and psychosocial reintegration. More over the disposition site for discharge was also discussed that highlighted the stepdown rehabilitation for impactful reintegration in society.
